LIS 5453 Digital Collection
This artifact is for LIS-5453 Digital collections, taken in Spring 2023. The paper chosen was the digital collection evaluation assignment. The assignment was to apply the NISO framework to a digital collection. The collection chosen for the assignment was the Internet Archives.
Selecting the Internet Archive and comparing it to the NISO framework was both a good fit and a challenge. Since the collection incorporated other collections, comparing the collection made it challenging because the organization is based on the uploader or the scheme of the linked collection. This did not work well because while each had merit and clear organization as a small collection, the Internet Archive encompassed too many of these other organized collections to make it meet some of the NISO framework requirements. I did learn more about copyright and fair use laws when applying them to items in the collection.
Looking at the database through the NISO framework made me realize how important it is to have proper documentation and policies for copyright and to protect intellectual property. This is something I will keep in mind when handling collections. There needs to be a way to contact the collection to handle copyright disputes, but also a way for the user to quickly tell what permissions each item in the collection falls under or not. This project also taught me how to professionally review a digital collection not only for legality but also for usability for providing information and materials for a diverse population which ties into both SLIS SLO 1 (2022) of Core Knowledge and ALA Core Competences (2023) Organization and Recorded Knowledge due to the ethics of sharing copyright materials. This also contributed to my understanding of the design principles for diverse groups, which ties to both SLIS SLO 6 (2022) and ALA Core Competences (2023) Reference and User Services.
