LIS 5193 Information resources and Services for Young Adults
This artifact is for LIS 5193 Information Resources and Services for Young Adults. It was created in the Spring of 2022, and it was a report and podcast created with Alice Carey, Kayla Ashley, and Taylor Bellamy. The report was to demonstrate our understanding of design thinking.
Overall the paper and podcast were a success. The meetings between us on Zoom and the collaboration in Google Docs worked great. Some of the recordings of the voices did not go so well. In the future, I would like to up the production value of the podcast and have a few sections rerecorded due to some processing and stuttering. I learned about audio quality, how much I can manipulate somebodies voice and some of the limitations with Audaticty.
Before this class, I had many experiences in group work and design thinking as an engineer. Most of the projects and applications during that time were group work. The one thing that stuck out to me was the marketing aspect of the design thinking process. Trying to make something exciting and appealing to a wide range of people was something I hadn't done before. It highlighted the need for me to grow and learn these skills for advocacy. It changed how I have been describing programs I want to do or how I help in the maker lab to entice customers to keep coming in. As an engineer, I often look at the faults in something or learn to quell users' expectations or wants on projects due to time and budget. It also showed me that if I need to edit and create a podcast, I would want to articulate better what I am looking for in the recording quality and pacing of the podcast between each presenter. It also taught me how to communicate with teens in the maker lab. One of the lessons I learned from the class was how teens perceive the world and how to effectively and engagingly provide them with the information they are looking for. The class has helped me develop better programming with teens and assist them in the maker lab. This learning and understanding ties into SLIS SLO 6 (School of Library and Information Studies, 2022). Before taking this course, I did not understand the diverse information needs of young adults, but with this project and class, I have gained knowledge and built an excellent base to assist young adults. During one of my performance reviews, I was commended on my improvements in this area. The course also helped me with my own learning goals by providing me with new resources and an understanding of how to evaluate resources for young adults, which falls under the ALA Core Competences of Information Resources (2023). It also helped me gain more knowledge of how marketing and programming can be done in makerspaces which ties into my personal learning objective two.
