LIS 5033 Knowledge and Information Society
This artifact is for LIS 5033 Knowledge and Information Society, taken in Fall 2021. This paper discusses intellectual freedom in public libraries.
I felt the paper was too unorganized and did not provide enough detail on each topic discussed under intellectual freedom. I would change some information and provide a deeper understanding of intellectual freedom.
Intellectual freedom is something I have been thinking about in-depth, especially since becoming part of the Pioneer Library System (PLS) library's maker lab. I would approach it in a completely different way. While intellectual freedom is not just about providing access to information, it is also the willingness to put yourself forward as a source of information. I have also been paying more attention to the news about libraries and how intellectual freedom is being challenged. Also, since the class, I have had intellectual freedom training at the library and taught how to respond to those who are challenging material. This assignment also helped put into perspective how vital intellectual freedom is when an organized group tries to remove items from libraries. Before this course, I did not know about libraries' history and intellectual freedom. This course and artifact taught me the ethics of libraries and their history. All fall under the SLIS SLO 1 (2022) and ALA Core Competences (2023) in my own learning goals. This course also made me grow in my written communication skills. I learned to cite in APA 7 and communicate in writing at a high level, another part of the ALA Core Competences (2023). As well as gateway knowledge in the form of learning the history of intellectual freedom and the legal framework that public libraries operate under.
